Visit to Morocco in December 2011 and to follow up on our 2010-11 matching grant.

Kahala Sunrise Rotary Club members Jan Rumi and Bob Buss, along with Maeona Mendelson, a literacy and inter-generations consultant at Chaminade University and with AARP, went to Morocco in December 2011 to begin planning the Club’s international project in cooperation with the Rotary Club de Rabat, which enjoys a sister club relationship with Kahala Sunrise.

In discussions with the Club leaders, it was decided to focus the project on creating two English Language Clubs at two public schools in Rabat, which will receive funds for purchasing computers and software for online communications.  The Rotary Club de Rabat, represented by Past Club President and District Governor 2011-2012 Saadia Aglif and Past Club President Mohamed Himmiche, will secure the schools and create a working relationship in order to create and facilitate the clubs.

The Kahala Sunrise Rotary Club, represented by its international chair Jan Rumi and director Bob Buss, will create an advisory group directed at providing links between the two English clubs in Morocco with classroom students and teachers from Hawai’i.

We expect to return to Morocco, perhaps in the Fall of 2012 or Spring of 2013 to generate support and live interactions with students in the two clubs and their teachers.  Jan and Bob left the Morocco club with some sample materials from Motheread, which may be used as part of the project down the line.
